Crop Tops, The DIY Trend and High Kicks (or not so high as the case may be)
I have such a love/hate relationship with crop tops. They are so cute, feminine and flirty and their newly emerging sassy sister the bra top is equally as compelling. Yet neither of these styles lend themselves easily to being worn anywhere except a music festival or the beach on a weekend. Luckily for all of us the poplin shirt and wearing smaller shirts over said poplin couldn’t be more on trend. Introducing a new way to make the bra top wearable, even at the office.
Let’s start with something you are almost guaranteed to already have in your closet: a poplin or striped menswear inspired shirt. Ever since the 2016 resort collection from Celine suiting (also referenced HERE), pinstripes and redone masculine silhouettes are back in a huge way through crisp white shirts and oversized trousers. As a result we all now have this former suiting staple, the white button-down, in several variations in our closet. Also from Celine we see shorter tops layered over the button down, but now it’s time for one step further and start stepping away from the purely masculine look and start adding color as well.

Moroccan and tropical prints are my favorite prints of the season and they look amazing in a crop top. I can imagine if I were on a beach somewhere I would happily wear these with a flowing skirt and sandals but I’m not on a beach, I am in Seattle (for now.) These prints do contrast beautifully with the masculine striped shirt and together we have a work ready combination that is a fun, interesting and isn’t just your average button down. With such strong masculine vibes I chose a pair of Mom Jeans (high waisted, makes your mother cringe) that are partially deconstructed which is another popular trend of the moment. To soften up the look I added uber feminine heels from Zara that look like someone had a field day with a bedazzler on the heels. I love this opulent look of shoes being almost art pieces with their embellishments and fabric wrapped heels and while I wish I was someone who could DIY these I am more likely to be the person who buys someone else’s fabulous creations and there is no shame in that. I find myself constantly being asked if I distressed my jeans myself or added patches to them and again while I prefer to buy my clothing pre-distressed there definitely is a do-it-yourself look to a lot of clothing these days so if you are the creative type this is really your time to shine. No post is complete without an awkward high kick so embrace your unique style and have a fabulous week!
