Sustainable Couture: Met Gala Quilted Jumpsuit
intro
video
Two weeks ago I had the realization that the Met Gala was coming up and it might be a fun endeavor to see if I could create a look inspired by the theme of Karl Lagerfeld: a line of beauty. Karl Lagerfeld, despite being a controversial figure a lot of the time, nevertheless influenced my fashion journey through his love and appreciation of crafts such as crochet. He believed that crafts should be celebrated as art and I couldn’t agree more.
I created this Met Gala ‘sustainable couture’ look using deadstock metallic tweed from Nona Source. The fabric was quilted by hand and shaped into a wide leg jumpsuit with sculptural pockets. I used boning in the crochet sleeves to give the illusion of a structure that could support themself and hand-made silk organza flowers for the hood. For a bigger window into the inspiration and craft behind these pieces checkout the behind-the-scenes interview with me on Youtube.
